Yes - but let me explain! I use a series of vintage slipcasting molds to create my chess pieces. They are poured, released, & refined by hand. When the pieces are initially released from the molds, they need lots of work. I carefully carve away seam lines and imperfections using various hand tools. The pieces are then dried then loaded into the kiln for the bisque firing. Each piece is then glazed (by hand) using 2-4 coats. They head to the kiln for their last firing, get one final inspection (for perfection!) and then are finished off with baize on the bottom. One pair of hands does all of the work, putting lots of love into each & every set. Check out my TikTok if you want to see the prodction process in detail! @midknightkiln

The bottom of each piece is padded with baize so they glide smoothly on any board! After extensive research, I decided baize was the best material for my chess sets. Baize is a woven fabric made from wool or a blend (higher wool content = better quality baize, so I use a 95% wool blend imported from the UK). Biaze is superior to felt on many levels, including strength, density, and longevity. Whether you play chess daily or once in a blue moon, the baize bases of these chess pieces are designed to last. In comparison, most felts are cheaply made and pill easily.

If people seem to like a certain color scheme, I would definitely use the same clay & glazes to re-create sets. Although I am not currently taking custom orders, feel free to reach out and let me know what colors you would like to see more of! My TikTok page is a great place to see upcoming chess sets and get notified of my product launch dates. @midknightkiln

Don’t panic! You can purchase replacement pieces right here on my website on the Chess shop page. When you purchase, you’ll be able to fill out relevant info (like order number, color, specific piece needed).

At this time, I am currently not accepting custom orders. As an artist, I find that ceramics is most enjoyable for me when it’s led by creativity. This is when I create my best work and maintain excitement every time I walk into my studio!

All of my functional pottery pieces are dishwasher & microwave-safe, meaning neither should affect the integrity of the piece. However, some clay bodies tend to get extra hot in the microwave, so be cautious. Handwashing is best practice for the longevity of pottery in general, preserving the glaze & texture while avoiding potential collisions with other wares. However, throwing your ceramics on the top rack of the dishwasher is also perfectly ok!
Of course, this does not apply to chess pieces.
